Hey Pal, Have You Got the Time?

Do you remember how hot it can get in the summer? Or what its like waiting for a spring thaw while daydreaming about sun bathing and hot days at the beach—always knowing the time will come when we look forward to the cooler days of autumn, just as we are growing impatient for the brighter days of June. And that is how it should be. There is a rhythm and a pattern to the time of our life, and we know it, even if we no longer are bound to the seasons.

Kids These Days Or is it the Parents?

Just before I quit teaching to go back into the church ministry full time, I decided to do a survey (nonscientific of course) of about 300 8th Grade students. The survey asked a few simple questions which I full expected them to be able to answer. Here they are:
• What is the name of the planet 3rd from the star Sol?
• What is a noun and a verb?
• Who fought in the Revolutionary War and who won?
• What is the square root of 16?
• Write the words to the pledge of allegiance.

True Peace

100 years ago, as the Twentieth Century was ushered in with a wave of enthusiasm, we stood in the shadow of terrible politics that would soon bring the curtain down on the world’s hope for peace. The War to End All Wars, WWI, was fought on a global stage. And when it was over, hardly a single person could be found who was not affected by it. But it didn’t end all war. WWII erupted with all the fury of hell and evil and ended much the same way. Then the Mideast. Then Korea. Then Viet Nam. Then the Mideast again. Then Bosnia. Then the Mideast again.

The Eucharist is True Evangelism

One of the questions the Church Growth movement sought to answer was “Why do people come to church?” Survey after survey brought back the same answers. People come to church for a variety of personal and social reasons. Some of the answers were so painfully obvious one wonders why surveys were necessary at all. For example, many replied they came to church because it made them feel better, they felt energized for the week. Others said the sermons and the singing provided inspiration for their walk in Christ. And still others responded church attendance was an anchor for their family. These are all wonderful reasons for attending church; in fact, I can think of no bad reason for coming to worship God and fellowship with one another. But I wanted to give you one more reason, a scriptural reason that did not appear on the surveys at all.

Guarding the Inner Life

Let us then guard our hearts, let us guard our mouths.... “Hedge thy possession about with thorns, and bind up thy silver and gold, and make a door and a bar for thy mouth, and a yoke and a balance for thy words.” Thy possession is thy mind, thy gold thy heart, thy silver thy speech: “The words of the Lord are pure words, as silver tried in the fire.”

Living Water
Posted by Rev. Dr. Lance Giuffrida on 08/05/2008

Jesus says to the Samaritan women, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” (NIV) There are two important background facts that are needed to fully grasp what is going on here. First, rabbinic teaching was referred to as water that would fill the clay jars of those who learned. The teaching was considered so precious that not one drop was to be lost. Jesus is drawing upon this, and saying in effect, my teaching is of the highest quality and fully rabbinic in its content. The second fact has to do with his use of the phrase “living water.” Living water flows and bubbles and cannot be contained. This is not a rabbinic phrase. Jesus is saying to her, “my teaching is unique and will fill you to the brim, and then overflow from you into the lives of others.”
